The credit offsets corporate or income tax, with the unused balance refunded after three years, and immediate refund for JEIs, companies under two years old and companies in insolvency proceedings. Research must take place in the EU or EEA.

The Innovation Tax Credit (CII) is an extension of the Research Tax Credit (CIR) reserved for SMEs, applicable to expenses incurred until 31 December 2027. It targets the design of prototypes or pilot installations of a new product not yet placed on the market, standing out through superior technical performance, eco-design, ergonomics or functionality. The rate is 20% in mainland France on an expense base capped at EUR 400,000 per year.
DGFiPTax creditFrance (national)
The CICo benefits companies that signed a collaboration contract with a research and knowledge dissemination organisation (ORDC) between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2028. The credit equals 50% of the amounts invoiced by the ORDC for SMEs (40% for others), on an expense base capped at EUR 6M per year. The contract must be signed before work starts, invoice at cost, and cap ORDC-invoiced expenses at 90% of total project costs.

The Young Innovative Company (JEI) status targets new SMEs investing in R&D: at least 20% of expenses devoted to R&D, at least 50% owned by individuals (or assimilated entities) and a genuinely new activity. The main benefit is an exemption from employer social security and family allowance contributions for R&D staff, open to companies created before 31 December 2028. The profit tax exemption (100% of the first profitable year, then 50%) is reserved for companies created before 31 December 2023. The status is lost in the year of the 8th anniversary (11th for pre-2023 creations).
