Fidelity Investments Canada
No published quantum thesis; revealed preference instead: the Fidelity complex enters quantum at unicorn valuations, close to public-market liquidity (Nord Quantique lead at ~$1.4B by Fidelity Canada, Quantinuum via FIL seven months pre-IPO).
Investment thesis
Toronto-based asset manager (founded 1987, around CAD $380 billion AUM as of April 2026) whose equity funds can hold minority private placements, a mandate used for late-stage tech like ApplyBoard and now quantum.
In March 2026, funds it manages led a $30 million USD growth investment in Nord Quantique at a roughly $1.4 billion valuation, the first quantum lead anywhere in the Fidelity complex and Canada's fourth quantum unicorn round.
The public-markets-minded side of the Fidelity universe: distinct from F-Prime Capital (the Boston family VC) and Eight Roads (FIL's balance-sheet VC), it buys pre-IPO positions it can carry into listed portfolios.
Sister company Fidelity International joined Quantinuum's oversubscribed ~$800 million Series B in November 2025, seven months before the Nasdaq IPO, confirming a complex-wide pattern: enter quantum at unicorn scale, close to liquidity.
Anti-thesis
The patterns that trigger a fast no with this fund.
- A crossover asset manager, not a VC: no inbound pitch channel, no seed or Series A activity, no board-building support. Cold outreach goes nowhere
- Enters at unicorn scale only ($1.4B and $10B entry points); pre-unicorn companies are invisible to these funds
- Mutual fund private sleeves are small and marked quarterly: a markdown is public and painful (the D-Wave stake was cut about 85% in the 2020 restructuring), which makes the team valuation-disciplined and slow
- Deal access runs through bankers, existing investors and government co-investors (BDC), not through founders
