Investment thesis

Lockheed Martin Ventures is the USD 1B-capacity (April 2026, up from $400M) evergreen corporate venture arm of Lockheed Martin, with more than $500M deployed in 120+ companies, investing in dual-use deep tech relevant to defense, aerospace and national security. Quantum is one of the named focus areas alongside AI, autonomy, directed energy and advanced materials. Confirmed equity investments include IonQ (entered via the June 2020 Series B completion, alongside Robert Bosch Venture Capital and Cambium), Q-CTRL (USD 113M Series B-2, October 2024, led by GP Bullhound) and Atom Computing; D-Wave also appears on the LM Ventures portfolio. The strategic thesis centres on quantum computing for defense optimisation and quantum sensing for PNT (positioning, navigation, timing) in GPS-denied environments, as in the March 2025 DoD DIU QuINS quantum-navigation contract with Q-CTRL and AOSense (held by the Lockheed Martin business unit, not the fund). Portfolio companies get unmatched DoD programme-of-record credibility: more than 60 have become Lockheed Martin suppliers with over $750M in contracts.

  1. LM Ventures backs the full quantum stack, including gate-based hardware (IonQ, Atom Computing), so do not assume a sensing-only filter. The real constraints are different: it underwrites to Lockheed Martin mission relevance, not standalone commercial quantum advantage; it has never led a quantum round (followed the IonQ syndicate, GP Bullhound led Q-CTRL), so it will not set your price or terms; and a venture check is not a contract, the QuINS DIU award sits with the Lockheed Martin business unit, not the fund. If your roadmap has no credible path to a DoD or LM program, the strategic logic that justifies the check disappears.
