Investment thesis

Safar Partners is a Cambridge-based venture fund founded in 2018, investing seed to growth in technology companies spun out of MIT, Harvard and the University of Rochester. With over $1B under management and 75+ portfolio companies, it applies private-equity-style value creation discipline to deep-science ventures.

Quantum portfolio is one of its most active thesis pockets: it has backed QuEra Computing (neutral-atom leader; $230M round co-led by Google and SoftBank in Feb 2025), CavilinQ (quantum interconnects, $8.8M seed lead April 2026), and Lightsynq (diamond photonic interconnects; exited May 2025).

Core value-add is institutional: board and trustee relationships at its three partner universities unlock early access to IP and founding teams, plus deep hands-on technical recruiting.

Distinctive for blending VC velocity with PE-style return multiple discipline (4x+ gross targets).

Anti-thesis

The patterns that trigger a fast no with this fund.

  1. Passes on anything outside their university IP licensing comfort zone: if your core tech is not anchored in MIT, Harvard, Rochester, or a Safar-network lab, expect a fast no regardless of traction
  2. Skeptical of generalist quantum computing platforms competing head-on with IBM / Google / IonQ: they prefer enabling-layer plays (photonics components, cryo-CMOS, materials) where a small check can own a category
  3. Will not lead priced Series A above ~$30M post: they self-identify as seed / pre-seed deep tech and route larger rounds to syndicate partners
  4. Avoids founders without a clear academic co-founder or scientific advisor bench: pure ex-FAANG teams pivoting into quantum are a structural mismatch
  5. Passes on consumer-adjacent quantum or 'quantum AI' wrappers without defensible physics IP: their LPs underwrote them for hard-tech, not application layer
