Né au MIT en 2016 sous le nom The Engine ; le fonds a pris son indépendance en 2023 sous le nom Engine Ventures, dirigé par Katie Rae, avec 1,1 Md$ d'actifs sous gestion répartis sur trois fonds (Fund I 205 M$ en 2017, Fund II 230 M$ en 2020, Fund III 398 M$ en juin 2024).

Investit dans la 'Tough Tech' sur trois piliers : climat, santé humaine et systèmes avancés ; le quantique relève de sa verticale Advanced Computing and Quantum Systems, pas d'une thèse autonome.

Son pari quantique phare, Atlantic Quantum (qubits fluxonium issus du labo EQuS de William Oliver au MIT), a reçu un seed de 9 M$ mené par The Engine en juillet 2022 et a été acquis par Google Quantum AI en octobre 2025 : un exit, plus une position active.

Le pari logiciel antérieur, Zapata Computing (seed co-mené en 2018), a cessé ses opérations en octobre 2024 ; à mi-2026, le fonds ne détient plus aucune position quantique pure active.

Anti-thèse

Les schémas qui déclenchent un non rapide avec ce fonds.

  1. No active pure-quantum position since October 2025: Atlantic Quantum exited to Google, Zapata wound down in 2024; the live pipeline is fusion (Commonwealth Fusion Systems), energy, bio, and materials
  2. Last net-new quantum deal was July 2022; nothing in the Fund III announcement signals quantum as a priority for new capital
  3. Fund III's stated focus is climate, human health, and advanced systems; quantum hardware competes for attention against 60+ portfolio companies in capital-hungry verticals
  4. The lab-space and infrastructure pitch belongs to The Engine Accelerator, a separate 501(c)(3) since 2023; a founder funded by Engine Ventures is not automatically a resident, and vice versa
  5. Concentrated early checks with board seats mean slow recycling; expect high selectivity and long diligence for any new quantum hardware claim post-Atlantic Quantum exit
