Investment thesis

Engine Ventures (The Engine) is a Cambridge MA-based deep-tech VC founded 2016 by MIT, with ~$900M AUM across two funds (Fund II $500M 2024 vintage). Invests Seed to Series B across MIT-aligned frontier tech: fusion, quantum, climate, bio, materials. Cheques $1-15M.

Quantum bet: Atlantic Quantum (MIT spin-out, fluxonium superconducting qubits from William Oliver's MIT/Lincoln Lab team, seed 2022 co-lead with Future Labs Capital). Also exposure to Zapata AI (quantum-inspired algorithms, acquired/wound down 2024).

Value-add: unique MIT Innovation HQ access — shared lab space, Technology Licensing Office relationships, and proximity to Lincoln Laboratory researchers; strong DARPA/DOE non-dilutive syndication.

Not a quantum specialist — MIT spin-out thesis where quantum is one pillar among fusion, bio and materials. Most structural US institutional investor for MIT-origin quantum HW founders.

Anti-thesis

The patterns that trigger a fast no with this fund.

  1. Engine's MIT-spinout pipeline is concentrated in fusion, biotech, and materials, quantum talent at MIT (RLE, CQE) is more often spun into corporate labs (IBM, Google) than venture-backable startups
  2. Tough Tech Fund II ($400M+) needs to show DPI to LPs by ~2028-29, quantum exit timelines (15 to 20 years) exceed the fund's distribution expectations
  3. Engine's pre-seed / seed entry point means underwriting binary modality bets before clear winners emerge, which is harder in quantum than in fusion (where Commonwealth's tokamak approach has clearer milestones)
  4. The fund's value-add (lab space at The Engine in Cambridge, fab access) is less relevant for photonic or superconducting quantum, which require specialized facilities Engine doesn't operate
  5. Reed Sturtevant and Katie Rae have publicly emphasized tough tech with clear unit economics, quantum lacks the manufacturing-cost-curve narrative that fusion and synthetic biology have developed
