Investment thesis

Cambridge Innovation Capital is the deep tech and life sciences investor built into the University of Cambridge: a unique agreement gives it privileged, preferred-investor access to the university's spinout pipeline, now extended through a £250M Fund III (August 2025) with £100M+ committed to Cambridge spinouts and a rolling Entrepreneur in Residence programme. Its quantum conviction is concentrated and proven: CIC co-led Riverlane's £3.25M seed in 2019 and has backed every round since, through the $75M Series C (August 2024) and again as one of the first two investments of its £100M Opportunity Fund (February 2025), alongside photonic computing bet Salience Labs, whose seed it co-led with Oxford Science Enterprises. With over £600M under management across early-stage and growth vehicles, CIC plays the picks-and-shovels layer of quantum, error correction and enabling hardware, rather than betting on full-stack quantum computers.

  1. Hard Cambridge filter: the unique agreement and Fund III mandate centre on the Cambridge ecosystem; founders without a credible Cambridge affiliation (spinout, lab, team) are structurally out of scope, whatever the quantum thesis
  2. Single-name quantum exposure: Riverlane is the only pure-play quantum position; CIC has passed on every other UK quantum round (including Nu Quantum across four rounds), so a second quantum bet would compete with a deep incumbent conviction
  3. Stage discipline by vehicle: early funds write seed/Series A cheques, the £100M Opportunity Fund caps at £20M per later-stage deal; rounds above that envelope need a larger lead
  4. Academic spinout bias: the EIR programme and university partnership favour IP-led ventures built from research; commercially-led quantum startups without an academic moat fit the model poorly
