Investment thesis
Google Quantum AI is Alphabet's dedicated quantum research arm, based in Santa Barbara, and — crucially — the group actually making quantum investments at Google, not GV (Google Ventures). The unit develops superconducting qubits in-house, published the landmark December 2024 Willow chip error-correction breakthrough, and publicly committed to delivering a large-scale fault-tolerant system by the end of the decade.
It has made selective strategic investments, most notably leading the $230M convertible round in QuEra Computing in February 2025 — a neutral-atom bet outside Google's own superconducting roadmap, signaling recognition that multiple qubit modalities may win. Also co-invested in SandboxAQ, Alphabet's own quantum software spin-out.
Value-add is uniquely technical: access to Google's quantum research, Willow-class hardware, cross-modality benchmarking, and deep error-correction expertise.
Distinctive as the only quantum investor simultaneously building its own full-stack platform.

- Direct superconducting hardware competitors to Google's internal stack will not be welcomed.
