Investment thesis

Quantum Valley Investments (QVI) is a private fund established in 2013 by BlackBerry co-founders Mike Lazaridis and Doug Fregin to commercialize breakthroughs in quantum information science from the Waterloo ecosystem. The fund is a pure-play quantum vehicle with CAD $100M initial commitment, funded entirely by the founders' personal capital.

Embedded in the Waterloo quantum cluster alongside the Institute for Quantum Computing, Perimeter Institute and the University of Waterloo, QVI offers portfolio companies privileged access to top-tier research, specialized cleanroom and nano-fab infrastructure, and a world-class Scientific Advisory Committee.

It supports ventures from very early prototypes through commercialization, writing flexible tickets against a long-term, thesis-led horizon.

Differentiated as one of the only founder-capitalized funds globally with a 100% quantum mandate.

Anti-thesis

The patterns that trigger a fast no with this fund.

  1. Pure academic research projects without a clear commercialization timeline: Lazaridis built QVI explicitly to fix the valley of death between IQC/Perimeter science and product, not to fund another lab
  2. Software-only quantum plays with no defensible IP moat: QVI's pattern (Isara, evolutionQ, Photonic, Quantum Benchmark) is deep patent portfolios, not thin SaaS wrappers
  3. Teams with zero Waterloo / IQC / Perimeter linkage: nearly every QVI bet has a Lazaridis-network founder (Mosca, Laflamme, Simmons axis)
  4. Generic NISQ application startups chasing optimization or finance demos without hardware or cryptography depth: QVI funds enabling-layer infrastructure, not application veneers
  5. Cap-table-heavy companies needing a quick flip: QVI is Lazaridis/Fregin personal capital with a decade-plus horizon (Quantum Benchmark held until Keysight acquisition)
