Cerberus Capital Management
PE giant whose venture arm (Cerberus Ventures, launched 2023 under ex-In-Q-Tel CEO Chris Darby) backs quantum infrastructure with national-security relevance: dilution refrigerators (Maybell Quantum, Series A lead) and quantum interconnects (Lightsynq, Series A lead, acquired by IonQ in May 2025).
Investment thesis
Global alternative asset manager (~$65B AUM, founded 1992 by Stephen Feinberg, now US Deputy Secretary of Defense; firm led by CEO Frank Bruno since March 2025) with a dedicated early-stage arm, Cerberus Ventures, launched 2023 under ex-In-Q-Tel CEO Chris Darby.
Cerberus Ventures backs Seed to Series B companies in national-security-relevant deeptech (compute, energy, bio, infrastructure); Fund I (Cerberus Ventures One) held a $74.7M first close in April 2025.
Quantum thesis is picks-and-shovels infrastructure: led Maybell Quantum's $25M Series A (cryogenics, March 2024) and Lightsynq's $18M Series A (photonic interconnects, November 2024).
Track record includes a fast strategic exit: Lightsynq was acquired by IonQ in an all-stock deal (~12.4M IonQ shares) closed May 2025, about 6 months after exiting stealth; Maybell went on to raise a $40M Series B led by Addition in September 2025.
Anti-thesis
The patterns that trigger a fast no with this fund.
- Quantum is a sliver of the franchise: two quantum cheques (~$43M combined) inside a ~$65B credit-and-PE house, and no new quantum deal since November 2024; 2025 deployments went to AI, bio, and security instead
- Cerberus Ventures Fund I is small ($74.7M first close, final close not announced); follow-on depth is unproven, and Maybell's $40M Series B had to be led by an outside firm (Addition)
- The Lightsynq exit (all-stock to IonQ, ~6 months after stealth) shows a strategic-M&A reflex that may suit Cerberus more than founders seeking long independent build-out
- National-security framing cuts both ways: expect ITAR/export sensitivity, US-persons bias, and possible friction for non-US founders; founder Feinberg's move to the Pentagon adds reputational and conflict-of-interest scrutiny around defense-adjacent deals
